Seahorses

Diving in Madeira in 2025 included a night dive during which we came across five seahorses; a marine creature on my diving bucket list. There was a swell at the time disturbing the sediment so they were difficult to photograph. They seem more prevalent this year, probably because of two factors. Firstly, at the Madeira Marine Research Centre there is a PhD student leading a research project where they are seeding the Madeira DivepointHouse Reef with indigenous algae that the seahorses live on. Secondly, this algae has in the past been decimated by a non-native, highly invasive species of Black Sea Urchins. Over the past few years, the population of these Sea Urchins has dramatically declined, probably because of a virus, so the algae is recovering and the Seahorses are making a comeback.
